Hey
My girlfriend has been told she needs to start a new form of the pill as the one she is taking is doing her no good!
We want to know how long after starting this pill we have to use condoms for???
Any help would be great :)How long after starting new pill do i have to use contraception for?
Usually the pill takes one whole cycle before it is effective. So, if her pills run a 28 day cycle, you two must use a different form of contraception for 28 days. How long after starting new pill do i have to use contraception for?
Well I would like an explination on ';doing no good';. Because they will prevent pregnancy no matter what they are. If they are doing no good in other areas such as keeping her regular or helping with cramps then that's a different story. But it will prevent pregnancy no matter which pill it is.
So if she has been on the pill and just switches to a different kind then you don't have to use any back up.
But if she stopped taking the pill she was on and there was a break inbetween when she started the new one, then I would use condoms for a full month.
If both pills are combined oestrogen progesterone, if she finishes her 21st pill of the old pill and then starts her first pill of the new pack the next day, ie misses her 7 day break, contraceptive cover is continuous. If there is a gap between the 2 pills then you need to use a condom for 7 days. However if she starts the new pill on the first day of her next period, again cover is immediate.
