So i just bought a New Parakeet. (Promise) I've had Her over a Week now. And i've been trying to Tame Her. Like i stick my Finger in the cage And she is calm But when i Get closer to her She like Flys out of the cage And it takes forever To get her in the cage. I don't have any Money to go Get her Wings clipped at a vet. So Is their any Tips or Tricks on how to Tame A Parakeet that can fly?How to Tame Parakeet that Can fly? O__O?
get her wings cliipped so she cant fly... then tame herHow to Tame Parakeet that Can fly? O__O?
Your bird sounds as though she is afraid of your hands,so use food in your hands to get her to trust you.Her fave veggie or millet will be useful for this. When Promise is in the cage, she must get on your hand to come out, otherwise, she escapes, you chase her,and she wont come to you,am I right? This can become a bad cycle.Birds that are being hand tamed cannot be free-flighted or come and go as they like, they must have limits. If she cant come back to you,or your hand,or the cage, then she needs to stay in it for now for her safety. If you cant trim her,she needs to stay in the cage while you train, until you can go to the Vets to get them trimmed or to a pet shop to get them trimmed. When you do get them trimmed, make them show you how so you can continue their training. For now, very slowly move to the bird with some millet while they are caged.Watch her body language-when she goes to move away, stop moving towards her.Place the millet/veggie somewhere near her without scaring her.Let her have some of the treat, then gently remove it after a few minutes without scaring her or making fast movements.Repeat several times a day,as often as you can.You will notice that you can get closer, slowly over time, until you get her in your hand.Whatever food you use,she only gets it at training time.Limit each training session to five minutes or so to limit stress. You will be able to make each session longer once she gets in your hand.
Take a sand perch cover, or a perch out of the cage, and use that to get it to step up. After the bird gets used to that, then change to your finger. When they bird flies to a place, that you want it down from, (I know, they always fly to the highest places), reach up with the sand perch or the perch and let it step on that, soon you will have it on your finger. While you have it on the perch, slowly bring it close to your face and talk to the bird, maybe a very quiet whistle. It will be tamed in no time.
Well, you did just get her a week ago, but she does not trust you yet. She's trying to get used to your presence and her new home. If you're skilled enough, you could actually cut her wings, just don't get close to the blood feathers it will hurt her. What you do is spend time with her more before you stick your hands or fingers inside the cage. You must show her that you'll always be around, therefore she will trust you. You could also talk to her with a very soft calm voice, and never raise your hands up to your shoulder level, she will be afraid. She will trust you this way, but it will take a very long time till a parakeet can trust you.
Once your keet trusts you, you could stick your hand inside the cage to see if she'll be comfortable with it. If she isn't, remove your hand from the cage, she could be afraid and become stressed.
Once your keet is okay with you and your scary hand ( XD ), you can actually tame her even though she is flying. I never cut my birds wings, I feel like they should have them because...well they are birds X3.
Well! I hope this helped you a lot! Good luck with your little girl ^^
